Workers’ compensation cases are all that we do, and we focus exclusively on those who have been injured on the job. Georgia’s workers’ compensation laws are complex. The process is heavily regulated. In fact, there’s a whole code section dedicated exclusively to rules and regulations for both the injured worker, employers and insurance companies. Since helping injured workers is our sole focus, we are best equipped to help maximize the benefits that you are entitled to under the law.

What Norcross workers should know about injury compensation

One of the most important factors to keep in mind for Norcross workers who have suffered a job-related injury or illness is to take action as soon as possible. First and most importantly, seek medical attention and notify your supervisor or manager immediately. If you wait too long to file a workers’ compensation claim or notify your boss, insurance companies could view your injury and claim as illegitimate.

You also don’t want to wait long due to Georgia’s statute of limitations, which says that a workers’ compensation claim must be filed within 1 year of the accident date.

When it’s time to file a formal workers’ compensation claim, you’ll need to include key details about your injury and situation on the proper forms—details such as the location of the injury, how and where the injury occurred, date and time, and potential witnesses. Be sure to attend all follow-up medical appointments, and it’s highly recommended that you refrain from posting on social media.

Types of workers’ comp benefits available to injured Norcross workers

What types of compensation can I receive for my workplace accident, injury or illness?

The answer depends on the specific details of your case. Once the workers’ comp benefit process has started, a worker injured on the job could be entitled to receive compensation for the following financial losses:

    • Permanent disability benefits. Following medical treatment, your physician may determine that you suffer from a certain level of “permanent” impairment, which may allow you to qualify for permanent partial disability (PPD) benefits. PPD benefits are weekly payments that kick in when you are no longer receiving TTD or TPD wage replacement benefits. You may be able to get this payout even if you return to work.
    • Death benefits. If an employee is killed while on the job, these benefits are paid to the worker’s dependents (child or spouse) to cover funeral costs and lost wages.
    • Medical benefits. Your employer’s workers’ comp insurance should cover any expenses regarding medical diagnosis and treatment of a job-related injury. Emergency room, hospital and doctors visit bills should all be covered, as should prescriptions drugs and travel expenses (to and from medical care).
    • Lost wages. Roughly two-thirds of your lost wages should be paid weekly, up to a certain cap. The two types of wage replacement benefits available are total temporary disability benefits (TTD) and total partial disability benefits (TPD).

Additional benefits beyond what’s listed above may be available for those who suffer hearing loss, loss of eyesight, or the complete loss of a body part due to amputation.

Don’t take your employer at their word if they say your workplace injury isn’t covered.

“Ben is friendly, honest, professional. After being injured at work, my former employer played some games with my paycheck and health coverage; I never would have known they weren’t allowed to do that without Ben. He recovered money owed, had my coverage reinstated, and insisted they pay a penalty.”

    About Norcross, Georgia

Norcross is a small town in Gwinnett County, with a population estimated at about 16,000 people. The town traces its roots to its founding in 1870 by Atlanta-based entrepreneur John Thrasher, who named the small village after his friend, Jonathan Norcross, a railroad official and former Mayor of Atlanta. Considering that Norcross is located about 17 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, the area has seen massive growth in recent years as the metro area expands.

A prominent ridge through the Norcross region separated Cherokee Indian territory from Creek Indian territory. Once white settlers started moving into the region, the town grew slowly from about 800 people at the turn of the 19th century to about 1,400 by 1950.

Today, Norcross offers that small-town American feel, while still having quick access to Atlanta. Norcross is hemmed in by I-85 to the south and 141 to the north. Peachtree Corners, a neighboring town of more than 40,000 people, is located just north of Norcross.

A couple of notable people from Norcross include two NFL players — Alvin Kamara, running back for the New Orleans Saints, and Chris Herndon, tight end for the New York Jets.

Another interesting historical fact about Norcross is that the first automobile manufactured south of the Mason-Dixon Line was produced here by Edward Buchanan, who was a native of the area. His car, called the NorX, was sold primarily to friends in the New York area. The brand and cars mostly disappeared as Buchanan’s Wall Street fortune dried up in the market crash of the late 1920s.
